AMD Ryzen 7000 “Dragon Range” Mobile CPUs Leak Out: Zen4 in Laptop Form, 4 SKUs, 16-Core Flagship & More

Last month, AMD published a press release announcing their official roadmap for Zen 4. Through that, we learned about the company’s future plans for both desktop and mobile. Perhaps, the most interesting takeaway from the entire thing was the introduction of a brand new segment of products called the “Dragon Range“.

Dragon Range is the name given to AMD’s top-of-the-line mobile CPUs. These are essentially the Red Team’s answer to Intel‘s HX-series, which are desktop dies soldered onto laptops using BGA sockets. Therefore, Dragon Range being based on AMD’s next-generation Zen 4 architecture, would also feature RDNA 2 integrated graphics across the board.

At the time, we didn’t know anything about this new product segment apart from the fact that maybe the flagship SKU will be a 16-core part, and that AMD might try to implement its 3D V-Cache tech here. Well, today, the first leak for Dragon Range has surfaced, possibly highlighting the real specifications of the lineup.

This leak comes courtesy of Red Gaming Tech who has shared the first alleged specs of Ryzen 7000 “Dragon Range” in a YouTube video. According to the report, AMD is planning up to 4 different SKUs in this range, all of whom correspond with AMD’s initial launch lineup for Ryzen 5000 desktop, and possibly Ryzen 7000 as well.

AMD opts to usually launch one six-core CPU, one 8-core CPU, one 12-core CPU, and one 16-core CPU as part of their introductory family of new Ryzen processors. That’s what happened with Ryzen 5000 desktop and it’s also what we expect with Dragon Range now.

Dragon Range, in simple words, is basically Zen 4 in mobile form. It takes “Raphael” (codename for Ryzen 7000 desktop) and shrinks it down to be equipped in laptops. It’s meant for enthusiast-users who demand the absolute most performance out of their machines with no compromise whatsoever.

The four SKUs part of AMD’s Dragon Range will be:

  • Ryzen 9 7980HX | 16-cores
  • Ryzen 9 7900HX | 12-cores
  • Ryzen 7 7800HX | 8-cores
  • Ryzen 5 7600HX | 6-cores

As you can see, these look like perfect counterparts to Ryzen 7000 desktop with their core configuration. As for the clock speeds, the leaker tells us to expect 3.6GHz to 4GHz+ base speed, depending on TDP and how the laptop manufacturer decides to play with that. Dragon Range CPUs will boast boost clock speeds ranging between 4.8GHz to 5GHz+.

Like I mentioned, these processors are designed specifically to maximize performance to absolutely decimate any task thrown at them, be it content creation, gaming, or other professional workloads. To aid in such scenarios, Ryzen 7000 Dragon Range will utilize its RDNA 2 integrated graphics to provide unprecedented levels of mobile performance.

That being said, discrete GPUs would still be preferred over relying on the CPU’s own graphics due to simply physics of much more powerful that configuration would be. Dragon Range is reported to come with two RDNA2 Compute Units, which won’t be enough for demanding workloads, but when used in combination with external graphics, the potential could be deadly.
