The next generation of Ryzen is nearly here and it aims to bring along massive improvements on both the desktop and mobile fronts. While little is known officially about the series, apart from the new Socket AM5 platform and its quirks, we’ve learned a lot from leaks, rumors, and various reports.
Ryzen 7000 “Raphael“, the main desktop lineup representing AMD’s best is rumored to launch this September, whereas Ryzen 7000 mobile is still a bit up in the air. Not only are laptop releases more subjected to delays, there are two different mobile lineups planned for Ryzen 7000, both based on Zen 4, but targeting vastly different markets.
Firstly, we have “Dragon Range“. AMD’s most powerful mobile lineup to date; peak performance aimed at enthusiasts who demand nothing less than the best. Dragon Range is essentially Zen 4 in miniature form and a direct competitor to Intel’s HX-series. It saw its first leak this morning which revealed the four SKUs AMD is planning at launch.
Secondly, there’s Ryzen 7000 “Phoenix“. This is more of a down-to-earth family of laptop CPUs and one that targets the thin and light notebook market. Here, efficiency is key as maximizing battery life while delivering a great balance of performance and thermals is what most users looks for.
AMD Ryzen 7000 “Phoenix” leaked
Rumors surrounding Phoenix have already been floating around town and today we have a new one to take a look at. This leak comes from Red Gaming Tech, who has information on the exact SKUs launching as part of Ryzen 7000 “Phoenix” and further information on their architecture including clock speeds and iGPU data.
Before we dive into the leak, let’s do a quick recap on Phoenix. As mentioned, Ryzen 7000 Phoenix is supposed to target the portable gaming notebook segment, with the TDP range being between 35W and 45W. Unlike Dragon Range, this lineup is using different silicone than Ryzen 7000 “Raphael” (desktop).
It’s still based on Zen 4 x86 cores, but they’ve been cut down in half. This may sound like a major performance hit, but due to there being less CPU cores on the die, it allows AMD to put more Compute Units for better graphics. For those of you unaware, Phoenix will come with RDNA3 integrated graphics across the board.
Therefore, the goal here shifts from unparalleled performance (in Dragon Range) to higher efficiency and more powerful graphics. Red Gaming Tech confirms in his leak that Phoenix will feature the latest RDNA3 graphics, which will be a major uplift from the RDNA2 iGPUs present in Dragon Range. Now, let’s take a look at the leak itself:
Because of more space on the die, AMD will be able to put up to 12 Compute Units (or 6 WorkGroup Processors) on the top-end Phoenix SKU. That’s 6x as much as the 2 CUs found in Dragon Range flagships. This means that configurations with up to 1536 Stream Processors (shaders) are now expected to power the Phoenix flagship SKUs.
Moreover, the integrated graphics are said to be clocked at 2.6GHz to 3GHz. In theory, that produces a teraflop count of 9.2 TFLOPs for the highest-end RDNA3 iGPU in Ryzen 7000 Phoenix. Early rumors have suggested that Phoenix would sport RTX 3060 Max-Q levels of graphical performance, and if the 9.2 TFLOP count is anything to go by, Ryzen 7000 would be an incredible performer and would usher in a new era for laptop gaming.
Red Gaming Tech reiterates that the RTX 3060 mobile is, in fact, the target here but that’s only for the Phoenix configurations with TDPs in the range of 60-70W. Phoenix is a lower TDP lineup, with 45W being the most amount of power it can be supplied, but that doesn’t mean it won’t perform well.
As for the SKUs reported to be part of the initial launch lineup, the leaker says we can expect four CPUs. These correspond with most of AMD’s launch lineups, with a x900 class part, a x800 class part, a x600 class part and a flagship x950, or in this case, an x980 class part. Anyways, here are the Phoenix SKUs planned for launch:
- Ryzen 9 7980HS | 8-cores and 12 CUs (6 WGPs)
- Ryzen 9 7900HS | 8-cores and 12 CUs (6 WGPs)
- Ryzen 7 7800HS | 8-cores and 12 CUs (6 WGPs)
- Ryzen 5 7600HS | 6-cores and 6 CUs (3 WGPs)
As you can tell, this is the “HS-series” which will succeed the current-gen Ryzen 6000 “Rembrandt” family once launched. The core configurations for Phoenix are the exact same as Rembrandt, but obviously it will benefit from the newer Zen 4 and RDNA3 architectures and all of their improvements. The leaker also mentions that I/O is largely similar to Rembrandt as well, but with PCIe Gen5 support.
Memory compliance is not “confirmed” at the moment. Red Gaming Tech’s sources tell him that Phoenix will support DDR5 and LPDDR5 and one source even states that LPDDR5X, which starts at 8400MT/s, will be supported. But this information is not yet credible enough to be considered confirmed without quotation marks.
Last, but arguably most important, the leaker shared the supposed design of Ryzen 7000 Phoenix. This design is not 100% representative of the actual, real-life silicon, but it does still look mostly like it. In the picture below, you can see that this is a chiplet design with the Zen4 CPU cores and I/O, the RDN3 graphics, and the memory, possibly Infinity Cache. All three are separated in different modules but are packaged on the same chip together.
All in all, Ryzen 7000 Phoenix is looking like a proper beast in its own right. AMD is already the leader of efficiency when it comes to mobile chips, but Intel had them beat with their HX-series of Alder Lake processors this generation if we talk about pure performance. Now, it looks like the Red Team is ready to bounce back, stronger than ever.
We’re unsure about the release window of Ryzen 7000 Phoenix. It will most likely launch before the Dragon Range, given how Intel launched their enthusiast mobile series after its mainstream series, as well. Right now, signs points toward a Q4 2022 announcement and launch, but we should be hearing more about Ryzen 7000 mobile in the coming weeks, both from official and unofficial channels to keep us satiated in the meantime.
