What is Efficiency Mode in Task Manager?
We all see that a lot of apps use high CPU usage even if they are idle. One of the most usual things users use to troubleshoot this issue is to close the applications from the task manager to prevent high CPU usage. However, it’s not a permanent or best solution to fix this. So here it comes Windows 11 Efficiency Mode, a new feature that Windows 11 introduced to reduce stress on the CPU. The feature helps improve thermal performance and fan noise. It also increases battery life. Moreover either it helps in identifying the running apps in Task Manager. Earlier, this feature was also known as Eco Mode, which was introduced in Windows 10 last year but now Microsoft introduced the same feature with some progressive changes as Efficiency Mode with the redesigned Task Manager.
How does Efficiency Mode work?
How does Efficiency Mode work? Efficiency Mode allows specific background applications to run with lower priority because Windows does not give essential resources to these apps. It means that Windows ensures that high processes will not interfere with the process you are currently using, and the current priority of that application will be set to lower.
The second thing it does is deploy the EcoQos mode, a Quality Of Service that works efficiently as the feature reduces clock speed and thermal throttling. Either it helps increase battery life.
According to Microsoft, using efficacy mode can reduce background consumption by up to 14 to 76%. Moreover, it significantly impacts the computer by reducing CPU usage while using different applications.
Why Microsoft Introduced Efficiency Mode?
Microsoft has analyzed the problem, which was reported by the majority of users regarding the high CPU usage. Most useless applications consume high CPU usage, which is one of the main reasons high CPU usage issues occur. Even though you can end task the application or services, in most cases, you can’t as they can bring problems to your computer system. Thus, Microsoft has introduced Efficiency Mode.
Is Efficiency Mode Available for Core Processes?
In Windows 11, you cannot enable the Efficiency Mode for core processes because it handles plenty of important Windows services, controlling power shell and logons. The main reason the feature is not available for core processes is that core processes are very important to run Windows smoothly, and their priority cannot be set.
Should I Turn On Efficiency Mode?
If you are looking to reduce high CPU usage, then Efficiency Mode is the best option to reduce CPU usage as it allows the application to go to sleep after inactivity of five minutes or less. So if you want to reduce the CPU consumption, enable the Efficiency Mode for those processes that usually run in the background even if they are idle.
How to Enable the Efficiency Mode?
Now we know what Efficiency Mode is and how it works. Let’s look into how we can take advantage of this feature by implementing it in Windows 11.
- Open the Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + Esc on the keyboard
- When you open the task manager, you will notice that the navigation bar is shifted to the burger menu on the left. You have to click the first icon in the menu to navigate into the processes
- Click the process which you want to enable Efficiency Mode or if you want to enable it on a sub-process then click the > icon to expand the sub-processes
- Either click the Efficiency Mode from the top or right-click the particular process and click on Efficiency Mode
- A confirmation Window will appear, it is a warning message that says it may cause instability for certain processes. Click on Turn on Efficiency Mode
- Once you enable Efficiency Mode, you will see a leaf icon of that process.
- Note: If the Efficiency Mode is disabled, it means that’s a core process, and you cannot enable Efficiency Mode on core processes as it may damage your system.
- That’s it.
How to Disable the Efficiency Mode?
- To disable the Efficiency Mode, right-click the Start Menu and click Task Manager
- Select the process you want to disable Efficiency Mode then right-click on the process and unselect the option Efficiency mode.
