AMD Unsheathes Ryzen 7000 Non-X, X3D & Mobile Lineup at CES 2023

It is AMD’s turn to give us some new products to enjoy. As leaked before, AMD was set to unveil the Ryzen 7000 Non-X family along with the Ryzen 7000 Mobile CPUs at CES 2023. Team red had a lot to showcase today, and we will go over everything unveiled one by one.

Ryzen 7000 Non-X Lineup

For starters, the Ryzen 7000 X lineup featured a base TDP of 105W, going as high as 170W depending on the CPU. As is the tradition, we were bound to see the 65W lineup sometime in the future and AMD did not disappoint. The Ryzen 7000 Non-X family features 3 CPUs, as of now namely;

  1. Ryzen 9 7900
  2. Ryzen 7 7700
  3. Ryzen 5 7600

Ryzen 9 7900

Starting off with the Ryzen 9 family, we have the Ryzen 9 7900. This CPU features 12 cores / 24 threads, similar to the Ryzen 9 7900X. The Non-X has one disadvantage and that is slower clock speeds. In this case, the R9 7900 has a base frequency of 3.7GHz which on boosting can go up to 5.4GHz. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 7900X offers a much higher base clock speed of 4.7GHz with a 5.6GHz boost.

Ryzen 9 7900 Specs

The Ryzen 9 7900 has 76MB (12MB L2 + 64MB L3) of cache, similar to its X-counterpart. A major difference is the 65W TDP which is more than 100W lower than the Ryzen 9 7900X (170W TDP). Once reviews go live, this CPU will give us an idea of how well Zen4 scales. Priced at just $429, it Is $120 cheaper than the 7900X making it an affordable next-gen choice.

Ryzen 7 7700

After that, we have the Ryzen 9 7900 packed with 8 cores / 16 threads. Yet again, the clock speeds have reduced with this particular CPU featuring a base and boost frequency of 3.8GHz and 5.3GHz. For comparison, the Ryzen 7 7700X was faster, having a base clock speed of 4.5GHz and a boost clock speed of 5.4GHz

Ryzen 7 7700 Specs

In the cache department, we see no difference as the Ryzen 7 7700 houses 40MB (8MB L2 + 32MB L3) of total cache. The 65W TDP will make this CPU a great choice for mid-range builds. Coming in at just $329 or $70 cheaper than the 7700X, it is currently the cheapest next-gen 8-core offering from AMD. Interestingly, the Ryzen 5 7600X falls in kind of the same region, pricing-wise.

Ryzen 5 7600

Last, but not least is the Ryzen 5 7600, or the cheapest Zen4 CPU in terms of MSRP by AMD. This CPU as many would have guessed has 6 cores / 12 threads. Despite the core/thread count not being that persuasive, it still is an extremely powerful CPU once you factor in the single-core performance. The clock speeds stand at 3.8GHz and 5.1GHz respectively. The Ryzen 5 7600X had a much faster frequency of 4.7GHz, going up to 5.3GHz.

Ryzen 5 7600 Specs

This CPU has a lot of cache for a mid-ranged offering, featuring 38MB (6MB L2 + 32MB L3) of total cache. Starting at $229, the Ryzen 5 7600 will without a doubt create many hurdles for Intel’s Non-K 13th Gen CPUs.

Performance

When the Ryzen 5 7600 is put up against the Ryzen 5 5600X, it is almost 30% faster in gaming. Moving over to content creation, the difference rises up to 46%.

Ryzen 7000 Non-X Performance

The Ryzen 7 7700 also shows a 30% performance uplift over the 5800X in gaming. The difference is up to 53% higher if you are a content creator.

Ryzen 7000 Non-X Performance

The highest-end Non-X, the Ryzen 9 7900 can perform 31% faster than the 5900X in DOTA 2. You will love Zen4 if you’re a content creator because this CPU is up to 48% faster than last-gen.

Ryzen 7000 Non-X Performance

AMD decided to compare its Non-X CPUs against the X CPUs as well. As weird as that may seem, the basis for this test is not performance but efficiency. Zen4 Non-X is up to 47% more efficient than its X-counterpart.

Ryzen 7000 X3D

Alongside the Non-X lineup, team red has also brought forth the Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs. Thus far, team red has only announced 3 products, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and the Ryzen 9 7950X3D set to arrive in February. All 3 CPUs have a base TDP of 120W, with large amounts of cache.

AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D packs 16 cores / 32 threads and a massive 144MB of total cache. This is a slight decrease from the 192MB, we speculated before, but still, 1.8x more than the base 7950X. This CPU will have an extremely fast 5.7GHz boost with a 4.2GHz base frequency. After that is the Ryzen 9 7900X3D with 12 cores / 24 threads and 140MB of total cache. The base and boost frequency for this CPU stands at 4.4GHz and 5.6GHz.

From the Ryzen 7 family, AMD has launched one X3D CPU namely the Ryzen 7 7800X3D which is packed with 8 cores and 16 threads. This CPU offers a slightly slower max frequency of 5GHz, with the base frequency lying in the 4-5GHz range.

Termed ‘The Ultimate Gaming Processors‘, the Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs will be available starting February 2023, or next month.

Performance

AMD decided to showcase the performance of only these CPUs and oh boy, we have some news for you. Against last-gen’s 5800X3D, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is up to 30% faster in gaming performance. That is a huge leap in a single generation. Now, these games have been cherry-picked by AMD, but even then the power Ryzen 7000X3D beholds is impressive.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700 X3D Performance

Giving us a sneak peek of what the 7950X3D offers, AMD compared this CPU against the i9-13900K and the result is simply, unbelievable. The 7950X3D is up to 24% faster in Horizon Zero Dawn. That is a huge achievement, considering how fast the 13900K is.

Ryzen 7000 Mobile

Next up, we have the laptop or mobile offerings by AMD. Before we go any further, we should make it clear that not all Ryzen 7000 mobile CPUs are based on Zen4. As confusing as that sounds, the chart below should make things a bit more clear. Give it a close look if you face any doubts.

AMD Naming Scheme For Mobile CPUs Post 2023

Barcelo, one of the families belonging to the Ryzen 7000 lineup was released back in 2022. Similarly, the ‘R’ in Barcelo-R and Rembrandt-R highlights a refresh of these CPUs. After that, Phoenix Point, or the 7040 series features AMD’s brand new RDNA3 architecture and is the only series to do so. Dragon Range is the highest-end offering but does not feature RDNA3, instead, AMD expects laptop manufacturers to pair these CPUs with discrete mobile AMD RDNA3 or NVIDIA Ada GPUs.

Mendocino

AMD already unveiled the Mendocino-based CPUs a while back in 2022. The AMD Ryzen 7020 or Mendocino APUs featured the Zen2 architecture along with an integrated graphics solution based on RDNA2

But today, AMD has unveiled the Barcelo-R, Rembrandt-R, Phoenix Point, and Dragon Range mobile CPU families.

Barcelo-R

For starters, Barcelo (Not the refresh) was introduced last year and was the successor to the Cezanne lineup. Despite the new naming scheme, there were not that many visible changes. Both were based on 7nm and made use of Zen3 cores and Vega graphics. Though, Barcelo did have slightly higher clock speeds.

In any case, the main topic of today’s discussion is not Barcelo, but Barcelo-R. As mentioned above, the R indicates a refresh. AMD’s Barcelo-R family goes up to a maximum of 8 cores and uses the Vega architecture as a graphics solution. These CPUs arrive with the Zen3 architecture boasting up to 20MB of total cache. AMD has opted for the 7nm process for this lineup of CPUs.

Rembrandt-R

Much like Barcelo-R, Rembrandt was also introduced last year, and at the same time (We’re seeing a pattern here). These CPUs were sold and marketed under the Ryzen 6000 mobile series. What’s the difference between Rembrandt and Barcelo, you may ask? Well, a lot. Firstly, Rembrandt did not use Vega but the latest and greatest (of that time, of course) RDNA2 architecture. In addition, it introduced PCIe Gen 4.0 along with support for DDR5 memory. Last but not least, it was manufactured on TSMC’s 6nm process.

Ryzen 7000 Mobile Specifications

Rembrandt-R is as you guessed, a redisplay of what AMD showcased last year, but with updated and better specifications. These CPUs are based on the Zen3+ and similar to last year’s CPUs use the same RDNA2 architecture. Featuring up to 8 cores / 16 threads, Rembrandt-R is manufactured on a 6nm process node and is packed with a maximum of 20MB of total cache.

Phoenix Point

Now, the real fun begins. We believe that Phoenix Point is AMD’s trump card, this CES. And we have many reasons why. Firstly, under the Ryzen 7040 series, Phoenix Point houses Zen4 and RDNA3 cores. You heard us right, Phoenix Point features not RDNA2, but an RDNA3-based iGPU. Intel will face some serious heat, at least in this segment.

AMD calls this the first x86 CPU to feature its signature and brand-new on-chip AI engine. These CPUs house almost 25 billion transistors.

Ryzen 7040

Fabricated on TSMC’s N5 (5nm) process, the Phoniex Point APUs feature a next-gen Zen4 CCX and a powerful (up to) 12 CU RDNA3 iGPU, with support for DDR5 memory and PCIe Express Gen 5.0. So basically, in the same package, you get both next-gen CPU and GPU compute power, at much lower TDPs than if you opt for a mobile GPU-equipped laptop. We have heard rumors that AMD is still keen on launching such APUs for the desktop segment as well. Although, we cannot say for sure due to the lack of information.

The first Ryzen 7040 notebooks will be available starting March 2023, so in almost 2 months.

Ryzen 7040 Series Release Date

Dragon Range

Mobile silicon has been pushed to its limits this time around, both by Intel and AMD. While Intel has introduced a massive 24-core i9-13980HX, most of the core count in that CPU is made up of efficient (16 to be exact) cores. AMD, on the other hand, has not introduced a hybrid architecture yet. So the Dragon Range family goes up to a maximum of 16 Zen4-based performance cores. Given the fact that Zen4 scales incredibly well, these CPUs are bound to demolish everything put in their way. These CPUs are based on a multi-chiplet design, which is a first for the mobile/laptop market.

Ryzen 4045 Mobile Specifications

Ryzen 7045 can boost up to 5.4GHz, and that is across performance cores on a laptop chip. The most breathtaking part is that these CPUs are packed with a lot of cache. Dragon Range has up to 80MB of L2 + L3, or total cache, similar to the Ryzen 9 7950X with a TDP of 55W+. The ‘up-to’ configuration is for the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which has a TDP of 75W.

Ryzen 4045 Mobile Specifications

Dragon Range comes under the umbrella of Ryzen 7045 CPUs featuring an RDNA2 iGPU. Note that most, if not all laptops with Ryzen 7045 CPUs will arrive with a dedicated mobile GPU.

Performance

The Ryzen 7040, Phoenix Point series is much faster than the Apple M1 Pro in Cinebench multiprocessing performance. That is a huge feat to achieve, considering the ISA difference. In addition, it is up to 34% faster than the i7-1280P in the same test. Gaming gives the 7040 family a lead of almost 21% over Intel.

Ryzen 7040 Performance

The Ryzen 7045HX series is 41% faster than the Ryzen 9 6900HX, at the highest settings using the 1080p resolution. In addition, even in triple-A titles like Shadow of The Tomb Raider, Ryzen 7045 offers 17% more performance than its predecessor.

Conclusion

That wraps at CES 2023 for AMD and team red showcased a lot of products, many of which were unexpected. We still are yet to see the Navi32 lineup, which may now arrive at Computex 2023. In any case, team red did unveil the RDNA mobility GPUs which you can read more about here. The Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs might have just stolen today’s show. Offering a huge increase over even the 13900K, we cannot wait to see these CPUs in action.
