Apple seems to be reconsidering one of its long-held convictions about the Mac. Bloomberg reports that Apple has teams of engineers working on touchscreen Macs. It is possible that a new MacBook Pro with touchscreen functionality may be released as early as 2025.
Apple Had Avoided the Idea of Integrating a Touchscreen into MacBooks In the Past
Apple has thus far avoided adding touchscreens to its Mac range. Steve Jobs notoriously criticized the concept. It was an “ergonomically terrible” concept, according to Jobs. “Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical,” he declared around the time the iPad was released in 2010. “After an extended period, your arm wants to fall off.”
In 2021, Apple marketing chief Tom Boger said that the iPad is the world’s “best touch computer,” while the Mac is “totally optimized for direct input.” Boger said at the time that Apple had no reason to modify this and add touchscreen capabilities to the Mac. Things seem to have changed, and Apple believes it is now time to contemplate a touchscreen Mac.
As part of this endeavor, the business is testing a touchscreen MacBook Pro. Apple is contemplating delivering this as soon as 2025, although there are continuing internal discussions that might change that schedule. The MacBook Pro redesign being examined at Apple maintains a “traditional laptop design” with a conventional trackpad and keyboard. The screen, of course, would “support touch input and gestures – just like an iPhone and iPad.”
If the business chooses to offer touchscreen Macs, Bloomberg reports that the technology might ultimately be extended to other models in the range as well:
As part of the MacBook Pro revamp, Apple is also planning to move its displays to organic light-emitting diode, or OLED technology. The company currently uses LCDs — liquid crystal displays — on its Macs, but iPhones and Apple Watches already rely on OLED. Those screens offer improved brightness and color and will also come to the iPad Pro in the first half of 2024.”

To support finger taps instead of mouse clicks, which need bigger buttons, Mac would need to make considerable software adjustments. Apple’s iPads and iPhones run an operating system designed for touchscreens, while macOS can only be used with a mouse and keyboard at the moment.
