Far Cry 7 Reportedly in the Works, Rumored to Be Set in Alaska

There have been rumours floating around recently suggesting that the Ubisoft mainstream entry Far Cry would return for a seventh instalment. The previous instalment in the series was published in 2021, therefore a new one is probably coming out sometime in the next two years, according to the series’s usual release schedule. Additionally, this game has the potential to rescue Ubisoft from the hole they’ve been in for the past 12 months.

On Thursday, Insider Gaming revealed that the next Far Cry single-player game is codenamed “Project Blackbird,” while the standalone multiplayer component is known as “Project Maverick.” According to the article, Dan Hay, the former franchise overseer at Ubisoft Montreal, states that both games evolved from a single game. After leaving Ubisoft in 2021, he joined Blizzard to work on a survival game that has yet to be revealed.

Like the DMZ in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, Maverick is reported to be an extraction-based shooter with “permadeath, a backpack system, contracts, and more.” According to the screenshots provided to the media outlet, there were also extraction zones and loot chests visible.

Blackbird is an unexplored area of the same game, and its setting is also believed to be Alaska. In 2015, a survey was sent out about the franchise, and one of the suggested settings was the Alaskan wilderness. According to that same study, the season pass for Far Cry 5 contained content centred around a zombie outbreak, the Vietnam War, and a futuristic sci-fi scenario on another world.

Whatever the case may be, it seems like we have a lot of Far Cry to look forward to in the near future. Given Ubisoft’s apparent shift toward the F2P model, it’s reasonable to assume that Project Maverick will be an F2P title in the vein of Call of Duty: Warzone, but this is just highly speculative at this point.
