Xbox Dynamic Background Editor Gets an Update, Indicates Microsoft is Still Committed to the Project

Last year, in May, it was reported that Xbox is allegedly working on its own proprietary Background Editor application that would let you create your own dynamic and interactive backgrounds. Although these types of wallpapers reached their peak of popularity in the early 2010s, we almost never come across them now.

However, it appears that with apps such as the Wallpaper Engine on Steam and Xbox’s future editor, the trend may be revived. Last year, we reported that a leaker going by the name of Aggioramenti Lumia had stumbled upon the project and uploaded a gif showcasing the software. Well, it appears that the leaker once again has new information, this time saying that the app has been updated. As of this writing, there isn’t much information available about the app itself, and it appears to be restricted to developers exclusively.

According to the tweet, we should hear something about the project soon, as an update indicates that it is still in the works and that Microsoft is taking the project seriously. To be fair, the company has done a good job of keeping the project under wraps, so we don’t know too much about it.

Aggiornamenti Lumia is a long-time Microsoft leaker who is familiar with unreleased Windows, Surface and Xbox devices. According to him, it appears that the program is a system that gives users the ability to animate backdrops with bespoke effects, at least according to the gif that he shared.

The gif appears to describe a system that allows you to upload custom elements and use up to eight unique effects at once, all of which may be arranged in a type of timeline. There appears to be a wide range of options for personalizing and animating backgrounds on both consoles and Windows computers.

Microsoft frequently puts to the test internal products and services that are eventually shelved or were created as part of contests or other side projects. Since the selection of Xbox Dynamic Background themes is quite limited, Microsoft may be targeting this feature directly at developers and licence holders rather than the general public to facilitate the creation of content for the platform.

Whether or not it was also developed for consoles is unconfirmed, however, given its functionality and aesthetic design, it was likely intended only for PC use. The problem is that we don’t have a lot of details, so we may have to wait for an official statement to get any more information. Until then, we’ll make sure to share any and all developments with you as they occur.
