Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 Expected to Rival Apple’s M-Series

The most recent technical details of Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 are quite encouraging, and if the SoC performs as a true rival to Apple’s M-series SoCs, we will have some serious competition in the market

Prior to this, we mentioned Qualcomm’s development on an unknown SoC under the codename “Hamoa.” As it turns out, @Za_Raczke, who had previously mentioned the 12-core SoC, has now said that the chip’s name would be Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4. Qualcomm is reportedly working on several chipsets, but the one that is said to provide the best performance is thought to include eight performance cores and four power-efficient ones.

Qualcomm’s Anticipated Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 to Include 12-Core CPU Along with Faster RAM Support

He doesn’t specify if the Qualcomm Oryon cores, which are specialized solutions made possible by the company’s purchase of Nuvia, would be included in the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, however. Even yet, the data he provides is intriguing on paper, with the performance cores of the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 being tested at a frequency of 3.40GHz and the energy-efficient ones operating at 2.50GHz. We won’t know for sure until silicon is used in commercial goods whether or not these clock speeds will stay the same.

Regarding the system cache, the informant claims that each block of four cores has a shared L2 cache of 12MB and an L3 cache of 8MB. Since the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 is said to have the same Adreno 740 graphics processor as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm is reportedly not creating a new GPU for it. It is still a strong GPU, but when used in Windows laptops as opposed to smartphones, the limits may start to show.

The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 might handle LPDDR5X RAM up to 64GB, however, the M2 Pro and M2 Max are restricted to LPDDR5 RAM. Additionally, there is an option to operate that memory at a lower frequency of 4.20GHz, which is likely to prioritize battery life when required. Discrete GPU support over 8 lanes of PCIe 4.0 is believed to be featured, along with Wi-Fi 7 and an external Snapdragon X65 5G modem.

Additionally, there are 4 lanes of PCIe 4.0 (configurable as 2 x 2) for NVMe SSDs, with PCIe 3.0 lanes set aside for the Wi-Fi card and modem. With the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, Qualcomm is also giving OEMs the option to utilize UFS 4.0 onboard memory rather than PCIe by way of a separate storage controller.

With all the details given today, this should be the Apple M-series rival that we are all eagerly awaiting. In summary, we are more than thrilled to see what this chipset will be able to achieve.
