The foldable phone market has seen a lot of innovation over the past few years, but not all of it has been useful. From oversized (and undersized) displays to unnecessary features, some of these devices have failed to provide practical benefits to users.
With the upcoming release of the new Motorola Razr phones, we may see something new, but it remains to be seen whether it will be a useful addition to the foldable market. While there is certainly potential for innovation in this space, companies must be careful not to prioritize flashy features over practicality and usability.
Recently, leaker Evan Blass published photos of what appears to be the next generation of the Razr. It appears from the pictures that the cover screen will be one of the major upgrades from last year. The unannounced foldable keeps the same sleek profile and dual-camera arrangement as its predecessor, but the outer display takes up most of the phone’s cover.
The new display takes up almost all the space available on the outside and wraps around the entirety of the Razr’s cameras. The images seem a little rough around the edges, which shows that they are rough outlines of the device and not an accurate depiction of the finished product. However, they do give us a bit of a hint at what to expect from the company.
The images also suggest that Motorola has modified its user interface in order to make the most of the phone’s larger display. Notifications are now displayed in their full size and there are two navigation buttons in the bottom left corner.
Initial Thoughts
In recent years, there has been a trend towards larger outer displays on foldable phones. However, we have seen with the foldable market leader, Samsung‘s recent decision to reduce the size of the outer display on their Z Flip series raises questions about the usefulness of these screens.
One issue with larger outer displays is that the area surrounding the cameras cannot be utilized properly, which limits the usefulness of the screen. Additionally, these large displays increase the cost of the phone without providing any real benefits to the user.
While larger displays may look impressive, it seems that Samsung has recognized that bigger is not always better, and that a more compact design may be more practical and cost-effective for users. In spite of all this, it remains to be seen how Motorola decides to implement it.
After all, these are merely leaks and do not represent the final product, so take this news with a grain of salt. In the meantime, we will keep you updated of any developments as new information becomes available.
