Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones Reportedly Has an Improved Version, Is the Game Finally Ready to Set Sail?

For several years now, Ubisoft‘s Skull and Bones has been one of the most anticipated games in the industry. However, it has also become one of the most infamous for its bizarre and prolonged development cycle. The game was first announced at E3 2017, and since then, it has been delayed six times. In January 2023, it was delayed yet again, leading many to wonder if the game is ever going to be released in full.

PC Gamer reports that during the Q&A session of Ubisoft’s quarterly financial call, an investment analyst asked whether or not the game Skull and Bones would need to sell a certain number of copies to break even after its lengthy development. He said: “I’m asking because I’ve seen the reviews and they don’t look particularly strong.

To this, the chief financial officer Frederick Duget responded:

We said in January, we’ve been very happy with the playtest that we’ve seen in early January, so we have a very strong improved version to show to players that they haven’t seen yet.”

Whether or not any of this is actually true is beyond what we know now. However, it seems that with yet another release date approaching, we may see yet another delay, or probably the game may never see the light of the day. Who knows?

Ubisoft has kept their promise to keep fans interested despite the latest delay by providing regular previews and gameplay footage.

Tom Henderson says he has been in touch with Ubisoft’s playtesters to learn more about Skull and Bones. The game, he said last month, still lacks the modifications it needs to be successful or even to justify its $70 price tag.

Tom’s website, Insider Gaming, claims today that the playtesters have not yet seen the new, top-secret build of Skull and Bones, and so everything that is happening at the backend remains a mystery.

Skull and Bones Release Fiasco

Skull and Bones was originally scheduled for release in 2018, but it was pushed back to 2019. When 2019 arrived, the game was delayed again, this time to 2020. However, 2020 proved to be an incredibly challenging year for the gaming industry, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing massive disruptions. As a result, Skull and Bones was delayed once again, this time to 2021.

But 2021 was not to be the year of Skull and Bones either. In May of that year, Ubisoft announced that the game had been delayed once again, this time with no new release date given. Then, in September, the company confirmed that the game would not be released in 2021 at all.

The delays continued in 2022, with Skull and Bones being pushed back multiple times. Finally, in January 2023, the game was delayed again, leaving many fans frustrated and upset. After all, this was a game that was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, one of the most beloved entries in that series.

The game would have proved to be something that revives Ubisoft’s lost lustre, but it wasn’t to be. Recent developments, however, are positive, and only time will tell if the game would even release this year. Till then, we will make sure to inform you of any developments as new information becomes available.
