Perplexity has introduced Computer, a new cloud-based AI system designed to break down complex tasks and assign them to multiple AI agents running different models.
The feature is currently available for Perplexity Max subscribers. According to the company, Computer can create and execute entire workflows, including tasks that may run for extended periods of time.
How Perplexity "Computer" Works
Instead of relying on a single large language model, Computer distributes subtasks across multiple models based on their strengths.
Perplexity says the core reasoning engine runs on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6. Other models handle more specialized work:
- Gemini for deep research
- Nano Banana 2 for image generation
- Veo 3.1 for video production
- Grok for lightweight, speed-focused tasks
- ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall and broad search
Users describe the outcome they want (for example, planning a digital marketing campaign or building an Android app) and Computer breaks the request into smaller steps. Each step is then delegated to the model best suited for that part of the workflow.
All processing runs in the cloud. Perplexity says each task executes in an isolated compute environment with access to a browser, file system, and integrated tools.
Perplexity Moves to Monetize Growing Interest in Agentic AI
The launch comes amid growing interest in “agentic AI” systems - tools that can operate more autonomously and handle multi-step processes.
The example of this is Google who rolling out tests with it's Gemini Agents on Pixel phones.
Earlier experimental tools in this space often ran directly on users’ local machines, with broad file access and plugin integrations. While powerful, those approaches raised concerns about reliability, security, and prompt injection risks.
Computer takes a more controlled path. It runs fully in the cloud and uses a curated set of integrations. The goal is to limit direct access to a user’s local environment while still enabling a solid workflow automation.
What Perplexity Tries To Accomplish With "Computer"
The Perplexity positions computer as a way to simplify workflows that advanced users were already stitching together manually by jumping between multiple AI tools. By coordinating models behind the scenes, "Computer" aims to make those kinds of workflows more accessible to non-technical users.
"Computer" Risks and Dependence On Large Language Models
Despite its structured design, "Computer" still depends on large language models, which can produce incorrect or incomplete results. Errors may be especially problematic when tasks involve sensitive data or automated file operations.
As with other AI workflow systems, users will likely need to review outputs carefully, particularly for business, legal, or technical use cases.
For now, Computer is limited to Perplexity Max subscribers, and the company has not yet announced a broader rollout.
