Sony has announced price increases for its entire PS5 lineup in the United States, effective April 2. The PS5 disc edition will go from $549.99 to $649.99, the digital edition will rise to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro will increase by $150 to $899.99.
Price hikes are also being implemented in Japan, the UK, and Europe. In the UK, each model will increase by £90. Sony stated in a blog post, "We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we believe this step is necessary to continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences worldwide."
What Is Driving The PS5 Price Increases
Sony attributes the recent price increase to pressures in the global economic landscape. Memory chips are a key factor, with prices rising sharply as manufacturers focus on supplying AI data centers. This has resulted in consumer electronics companies competing for limited stock at higher costs.
Piers Harding-Rolls, research director of games at Ampere Analysis, told CNBC that the price hikes were unavoidable. "It is likely that Sony had price protections for its components for a set period and this may well have come to an end," he explained. "With no sign of prices easing, Sony will have moved to protect its narrow hardware margins."
This is the second time in less than a year that the PS5 price has increased. The previous hike occurred amid ongoing inflation and uncertainty over US tariffs.
What The PS5 Price Hike Means For Competing Platforms
Harding-Rolls noted that Microsoft "Xbox" and Nintendo might follow with their own price increases. Nintendo has kept the Switch 2's price stable since its launch last year, but Harding-Rolls pointed out that raising prices on a recently launched platform could be challenging for the company. Meanwhile, Microsoft has not made any comment on Xbox pricing.
There is also the potential for increased component costs. Harding-Rolls mentioned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could lead to further inflation that might impact hardware supply chains.
Sony has not announced whether further price adjustments will occur or how long current pricing will remain in place.
