Zorin OS 18.1 Released With Windows App Detection Expansion as Downloads Pass 3.3 Million

Zorin OS has announced the release of version 18.1, along with reaching a milestone of three point three million total downloads, six months after its initial launch. The update expands the database used for detecting Windows applications, introduces some desktop improvements, and updates the pre-installed applications. A companion update, Zorin Lite 17.3, is also available for older or lower-spec hardware.

Zorin OS is a Linux-based operating system designed as an alternative to Windows and macOS, aimed at users switching from either platform.

Windows App Detection Expands to 240+ Apps

Zorin OS 18.1 has expanded its built-in database for detecting Windows application installers to support over 240 apps. When a user runs a Windows executable, such as the Plex installer, the OS shows a dialog suggesting the most compatible installation method, usually the native Linux version available from the app store.

The system also automatically recommends native Linux alternatives for Windows-only applications. For instance, launching Microsoft Outlook prompts a suggestion to use Evolution Mail instead. The developers say this feature offers tailored guidance for users switching from Windows, eliminating the need for manual research into Linux equivalents.

Desktop Changes and Zorin Lite 17.3

Zorin OS 18.1 introduces new options to its Advanced Window Tiling feature. When applications are selected, they now display their own indicator icons in the system tray panel. This allows users to check the status of apps or access functions directly from the tray, without the need to open the full application window.

Zorin Lite, the lightweight edition optimized for older or lower-spec computers, has been updated to version 17.3. The update adds support for fingerprint readers, introduces new desktop themes, and features a redesigned File Manager application.

Zorin OS Passes 3.3 Million Downloads

Zorin OS reached one million downloads after Windows 10's support ended on October 14, 2025. The number of downloads exceeded two million three months later with the release of Zorin OS 18. Currently, the total stands at 3.3 million after six months. Zorin OS has not provided a breakdown of download totals by region or version.
