Information regarding Compulsion Games’ new working project has been revealed in an interview with Xbox Squad. The studio, known for its work on the action adventure horror title We Happy Few, also shared future plans regarding the studio, and its current ongoing expansion.
In the interview (translated by VGC), PR and Community Manager Naila Hadjas expounded on the studio’s current focus with its new partnership with tech giant Microsoft. “I think we gave ourselves a little time to learn. It’s our first game with Microsoft and we’re learning a lot.” Compulsion Games is one of the many studios acquired by Xbox Gaming Studios in 2018 which includes Undead Labs (known for survival horror title State of Decay), Playground Games (currently working on the next Fable game) and Ninja Theory (known for its works on action title Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and DmC: Devil May Cry).
Speaking with regards to its expansion,“We have doubled the workforce and we are adapting to it,” said Hadjas. “The goal is to expand our zany universe, to continue to make our mark in video games as a studio that likes to make unique games, in little-used settings.” He concluded by saying that currently, this is their goal, “to pursue our ‘legacy’, our heritage, while remaining true to ourselves.”
Hadjas also spoke regarding the studio’s current project which is a “narrative, third person, story game”. One thing he has confirmed is that the game is unlikely to debut in early access due to it not needing any feedback with regards to its gameplay, unlike its work on We Happy Few. So far, no other details have been shared yet regarding the upcoming title.
For those who missed it, We Happy Few is a relatively successful survival horror title with roguelike elements. Released in 2016, the game challenges players to escape the dystopic town of Wellington Wells, all the while being attacked by its drugged inhabitants. The game has since become a cult favorite, being released on multiple platforms by 2018 and garnering praise for its story, art, and character design but received criticism for its technical issues and repetitive gameplay.
One other Xbox-affiliated development studio, Playground Games, also made round the internet today due to a misleading tweet by Xbox Gaming Studios that seemingly teased news about action role-playing series Fable. The latest Fable installment is currently being worked on by Playground Games who is also working on the upcoming racing title Forza Horizon 5.
