Google is rolling out a major upgrade to NotebookLM, introducing Cinematic Video Overviews, a new AI-powered feature designed to transform research notes and documents into immersive video explanations.
Alongside the video upgrade, Google is also preparing several productivity improvements aimed at helping users manage large collections of notebooks more easily.
Cinematic Video Overviews Turn Notes Into AI Videos
The biggest addition to NotebookLM is Cinematic Video Overviews, which builds on the existing Video Overviews feature but adds far more advanced visuals and storytelling.
The system uses several Google AI models, including Gemini, Nano Banana Pro, and Veo. Together, these models generate fluid animations and detailed visuals designed to explain complex topics more clearly.
Gemini acts as a creative director, automatically deciding how the story should be structured, which visual style fits best, and how information should be presented. The system can even refine its own output to maintain a consistent look and feel across the entire video.
Cinematic Video Overviews are currently available in English and limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 or older on both web and mobile.
NotebookLM's New Search and Pinning Tools
In addition to the AI video feature, Google appears to be developing new tools aimed at improving NotebookLM’s organization.
It is a common frustration, when users has too many pages, it's simply hard to navigate between them. A new search button should solve this issue and has been spotted on the NotebookLM home screen, which could allow users to quickly locate specific notebooks by typing part of the title instead of scrolling through long lists.
Another upcoming feature would let users pin important notebooks to the top of the interface, making them easier to access - similar to pinned chats in messaging apps.
These changes are designed to save time for users who work with dozens or even hundreds of notebooks.
Availability of NotebookLM’s New Video and Search Features
NotebookLM has quickly gained traction as an AI-powered research assistant, helping users summarize information, organize sources, and extract insights from documents, because of its unique feature (generate output only out of the uploaded files).
The search and pinning features are still in development, and it’s not yet clear when they will be available to all users. The Cinematic Video Overviews upgrade, however, is already rolling out to active Google AI Ultra subscribers.
