Microsoft Edge 146 Update Removes Collections and Stops Clearing Saved Passwords

Microsoft has released Edge version 146, and instead of adding major features, the update is focused on removing and changing existing ones, some controversial, others surprisingly welcome.

Collections Is Being Retired in Microsoft Edge

Collections, a feature for saving and organizing web content, is beginning its retirement in Edge 146. Users will see a banner indicating that new items can no longer be added. Existing saved content can be exported or moved to Favorites before the feature is fully removed. Microsoft has not confirmed a final retirement date beyond the current rollout.

Edge Is Deprecating Custom Primary Passwords

Edge 146 removes the ability to create a new custom primary password through Edge settings. Users who already have one configured will see a warning that the feature will stop working on June 4, 2026. On that date, Edge will automatically migrate affected users to device authentication. The change does not affect saved passwords themselves, only the custom password layer used to protect access to them.

Workspaces Are Moving to Edge Sync

Workspaces, which allow users to save and share sets of tabs, are migrating from OneDrive and SharePoint storage to the Edge Sync service. The collaboration and sharing functionality is being removed as part of this transition. For organizations that have disabled sync through policy, existing Workspace data will still migrate through the Sync service. Still, new Workspaces created after migration will remain local to each device and will not sync across devices. The migration began in Edge 145 and continues in 146.

macOS 12 Support Is Ending After Edge 150

Edge 150 is the planned final version to support macOS 12 Monterey. Edge 151 will require macOS 13 Ventura or later.

Edge 146 Stops Clearing Saved Passwords with Browsing Data

Edge 146 removes saved passwords from the list of items cleared when using the "Clear browsing data" function. Previously, users who cleared browsing data could unintentionally delete saved passwords. Passwords can still be managed, edited, or deleted individually by navigating to edge://settings/autofill/passwords in the browser.

What These Changes Mean for Edge Users

This update shows that Microsoft is simplifying Edge by removing underused or problematic features. While some changes (such as losing Collections) may not matter much, others (such as password handling) are clear improvements for many everyday users.

Edge version 146 is now rolling out to users on Windows, macOS, and Linux through the Stable channel.
