Android 17 May Add Smart Notification Rules to Automate Alerts and Reduce Lock Screen Clutter

Strings referencing a "Notification Rules" feature have been spotted in the latest Android 17 beta by the Android Authority team. The feature has not been officially announced by Google and is not available in the current beta build. It may not be included in Android 17's initial release. Android 17 has reached Platform Stability, meaning the API surface is locked, but Google has not mentioned Notification Rules in any official communication.

What the Android 17 Strings Reveal About Notification Rules

Based on the identified strings, Notification rules let users set conditions linked to specific apps or contacts and choose from several actions: Silence, block, silence and bundle, highlight, and Alert.

The feature seems to support rules for both app notifications and individual contacts, including calls and text messages.

Practical Use Cases And Notification Rules Availability

The available actions indicate that the feature is designed to manage high-volume notification sources without completely turning them off. For example, a rule could mute and group all messages from a busy chat, while another rule using Highlight and Alert could ensure messages from a specific contact always get through. This functionality overlaps with third-party apps like BuzzKill, which already provide rule-based notification filtering on Android.

Google has not confirmed Notification rules as a planned feature for Android 17. Strings related to this feature were also found in a leaked build of One UI 9, suggesting Samsung is working to add it to its interface layer.

Because the feature is missing from the current beta, even though Android 17 has reached Platform Stability, it might be included in a quarterly platform update after the initial release later this year. No official release date has been announced.
