Obsidian Entertainment Once Considered the Possibility of Developing a God of War Rival Game

Microsoft‘s long-running pursuit of acquiring Activision Blizzard is just the best evidence of how the company hopes to get an advantage over its competitors. While the acquisition’s background is interesting on its own (and you can read about it in full here), it’s worth noting that Microsoft has also passed up opportunities that would have helped form a significant portion of its future fan base.

God of War is just one example of a successful exclusive franchise that helps Sony stay on top, and with the most recent installment, Ragnarök, we all can attest to the series’ ongoing success. Microsoft may have had its own God of War with the acquisition of Obsidian Games.

The studio’s creator, Feargus Urquhart, recently spoke with NME and mentioned four games of this type that were previously unknown to the public. In addition to scrapping an RPG based on The Walking Dead that had trouble finding a publisher, Obsidian also scrapped a God of War rivaling game inspired by Journey to the Center of the Earth.

In addition, Obsidian’s CEO discusses Microsoft and the purchase agreement for 2018. Urquhart claims that he had to secure more reliable funding for Obsidian in order to continue producing The Outer Worlds and other games to his preference. If it wasn’t for Microsoft’s acquisition, we most probably would have seen some of the games talked about earlier.

The studio has evolved significantly in the last five years, judging by Urquhart’s stories of abandoned projects. In the past, this development house acted as something of a mercenary, taking up licenses for established franchises like Star Wars, Fallout, South Park, etc. and producing some of the best games ever made for those franchises. Even while it tried to launch its own properties like Tyranny and Alpha Protocol, neither of them really took off.

It remains to be seen what the studio has in store for the future, but based on the interview, Obsidian appears to have a lot planned. Do you believe that the studio will be able to get back to where it once was in the industry? Please let us know in the comments section below.
