Apple has announced a new version of the iPad Air, now powered by the Apple M4 chip. The update focuses heavily on Apple’s in-house silicon, bringing notable improvements to performance, memory, and wireless connectivity.
iPad Now With M4 chip and 12GB of RAM
The M4 processor is the headline upgrade. According to Apple, the new iPad Air is:
- Up to 30% faster than the M3 model
- Up to 2.3x faster than the M1 version
In addition to the faster CPU and GPU, the new iPad Air now includes 12GB of unified memory, a 50% increase over the previous M3 model. The extra RAM is designed to better support multitasking and AI?driven features in iPadOS 26.
iPad Air Gains C1X 5G modem and N1 wireless chip

For cellular models, Apple is transitioning to its in-house C1X modem, first introduced in the iPhone Air. Apple says the C1X delivers up to 30% lower energy usage compared to the M3 iPad Air, and improved efficiency for heavy 5G users
The New iPad also gains Apple’s N1 wireless chip, enabling Wi?Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support.
Apple also improved 5GHz Wi?Fi performance and better reliability for features like AirDrop and Personal Hotspot.
Same Design and Pricing as the Previous iPad Air
The updated iPad Air keeps the same overall design and sizing options:
- 11?inch model starting at $599
- 13?inch model starting at $799
iPad's storage remains at 128GB, with additional costs for higher storage tiers and cellular connectivity. Color options also remain unchanged: Space Gray, Blue, Purple, Starlight
When Users Can Pre?Order the New iPad Air
Pre?orders begin March 4 at 6:15 a.m. PT, with availability starting March 11.
While the external parameters remain largely the same, the combination of the M4 chip, 12GB RAM, C1X modem, and N1 wireless silicon makes this one of the most substantial internal upgrades to the iPad Air lineup in the past 2 years.
