Gmail Search Now Shows AI Overviews Powered by Gemini for Business and Enterprise Users

Google has expanded AI Overviews in Gmail search to include more types of accounts, now offering Gemini-powered search summaries to Business, Enterprise, and Education users. The rollout started on April 22, 2026, for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.

Google notes that it could take more than 15 days for the feature to reach all eligible accounts. Previously, this feature was limited to individual Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

How AI Overviews Work in Gmail Search

Instead of just listing emails that match search terms, Gmail now combines information from multiple relevant threads and shows a summary at the top of the search results in response to natural language questions.

Users can ask full questions like "What were the latest comments from the UX deck?" or "What are the details of my upcoming trip to New York?" and get a direct answer pulled from their inbox, without needing to open individual threads.

Which Accounts Get AI Overviews in Gmail (and Requirements)

The expanded rollout now includes these account types:

  • Google Workspace Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Google Workspace Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; education accounts with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on
  • Frontline Plus.

To access AI Overviews in Gmail search, Smart features and Workspace Intelligence need to be enabled in your account settings, or activated by an administrator for managed accounts. Both options must be turned on for the AI Overview to appear above search results.

Google has not announced when this feature will be available for other account tiers or for free Gmail accounts.
