Microsoft Announces Windows 11 Search Overhaul With Local Result Priority and Ad Removal

Microsoft has announced a significant update to Windows 11 search. The update emphasizes local results, removes promotional content from web results, and enhances the system's ability to handle typos and misspellings, according to a Microsoft blog post.

The changes are currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental Channel and are expected to be available to all Windows 11 users later this year. Insiders may not see the updates immediately, as the rollout occurs in stages.

This update is part of Microsoft's Windows K2 initiative, which aims to address long-standing issues with Windows 11.

What’s Changing in Windows 11 Search and New Web/Store Controls

Microsoft has outlined several improvements coming to Windows 11 search. The home screen has been simplified to minimize visual clutter and make it easier to return to recent searches.

Search results now show the source of each result, such as an app, setting, file, web page, or Store suggestion, helping users understand what they are viewing before clicking.

Web results no longer display promotional content first; instead, they present the most relevant answer at the top, avoiding related products and advertisements. A new setting in the Privacy and Security section of Settings allows users to control whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results.

When more accurate, local results take precedence, apps, settings, and files are more reliably shown ahead of web and Store suggestions. The search experience has also improved in handling typos, with better recognition of dropped or extra letters and partial words, so queries like "utlook" now find Outlook.

Settings search results have been enhanced with improved ranking to surface more relevant options, with further tuning planned. File search capabilities have been expanded to support two-character searches and improved handling of cloud and connected files.

Additionally, Microsoft has worked to reduce crashes and loading issues, with ongoing stability improvements. System items such as This PC and Recycle Bin are also easier to discover within the updated search interface.

The new user setting offers more detailed control over search results. Users can now open Settings, go to Privacy and security, select Search, and choose whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results.

This update builds on previous reports about toggle options for disabling Bing web results and Microsoft Store apps in Search, which Microsoft has been testing in Insider builds. Together, these controls give users greater influence over what Windows Search displays.

How the Overhaul Fits Into Windows K2 and What Users Should Do

The search overhaul is part of Microsoft's broader Windows K2 initiative, which aims to address long-standing issues with Windows 11. Recent changes include the return of a movable taskbar, a dedicated setting for taskbar size, and more options to pause Windows updates without limits.

Microsoft has also reduced the number of Copilot integrations across the OS and canceled the AI-powered history search feature in Edge. Additionally, the company reorganized the Privacy and Security settings.

This pattern of updates reflects Microsoft's response to user feedback that Windows 11 had become cluttered with promotional content, AI features, and other functionalities that users did not request.

For Windows Insiders on the Experimental Channel:

  1. Watch for search updates to arrive through Windows Update.
  2. Test the new search behavior with different queries and provide feedback via the Feedback Hub if you encounter any issues.
  3. Take a look at the new Settings, Privacy and Security, and Search options to set your preferences.

For general Windows 11 users:

  1. Continue using the current Windows Search until the update is rolled out later this year.
  2. Check your Windows Update settings to ensure the update installs when available.
  3. Make use of the existing search customization options available in Privacy and Security settings.
  4. Keep an eye out for Microsoft's announcement about the general availability.

When the New Search Experience Rolls Out

The search improvements in Windows 11 are currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental Channel. The rollout is happening gradually, so not everyone in the channel will see the changes at once.

Microsoft plans to expand these updates to all Windows 11 users later this year. The company hasn't announced an exact date for general availability, but based on past patterns, features from the Experimental Channel usually reach a stable build within a few months if testing goes smoothly.

Users can stay informed by checking the Windows Insider Blog and official Windows announcements for updates on when the search enhancements will become available to a wider audience.
