Meta Launches Instagram Instants App for Disappearing Photos in Spain and Italy

Meta has launched Instants, a standalone app designed for sharing disappearing photos. It is currently available on Android in Spain and Italy. The app is a successor to Shots, a disappearing photo feature Meta tested within Instagram last year. Meta confirmed the launch to TechCrunch but has not made a broader announcement about the app.

An iOS version has not been confirmed. The app's listing on Google Play describes it as a tool for sharing photos instantly without edits, emphasizing a low-effort way to share moments with friends.

What Instants Does and Where It’s Available

Instants opens directly to the camera, focusing on quick capture and sharing rather than editing features. Photos are set to disappear by default, similar to Snapchat’s model. The app offers a month-in-review feature that shows recently shared Instants but otherwise has a minimal set of features by design.

A spokesperson for Instagram described it as "a low-pressure way to connect with friends" and mentioned that Meta is "exploring multiple versions of Instants to see what people like."

Instants is now available on Android in Spain and Italy. Meta has not provided a timeline for when it might expand to other regions or release on iOS. It also remains unclear whether the app will stay as a standalone product or eventually be integrated into Instagram.

The limited launch in these specific markets indicates that Meta is currently using this as a market test before considering a wider rollout.
