Starbucks has introduced a new ChatGPT integration that enables users to get drink recommendations and add items to their Starbucks cart directly through the ChatGPT app. The feature became available on April 15 and requires users to connect their Starbucks account to ChatGPT via the Apps section in the ChatGPT interface.
How the Starbucks ChatGPT Integration Works
Once connected, users can type @starbucks in any ChatGPT conversation to access the Starbucks integration. This brings up a widget that displays up to six menu items, offering options to customize orders and add them directly to the Starbucks cart. Each suggestion includes details like flavor profile and caffeine content.
During testing, the ordering widget was not always available. Some sessions only showed text-based recommendations without the ability to add items to the cart. OpenAI has not explained the reason for this inconsistency.
What Data Is Shared Between ChatGPT and Starbucks
Connecting the integration requires agreeing to share a summary of your recent context and intent within ChatGPT with Starbucks. This is a default requirement for all users who connect to the integration. There is an optional toggle that allows ChatGPT to also share memories and full chat history with Starbucks.
This option is off by default. ChatGPT's connection prompt warns that linking the Starbucks app could expose Starbucks account data to attackers or give the Starbucks app the ability to access ChatGPT data as a potential attack vector. The data agreement follows the same structure as other ChatGPT app integrations, but the scope of data shared extends beyond what the drink recommendation function needs.
How to Connect It and Protect Your Privacy
To set up the integration, open the ChatGPT app, go to Apps, find Starbucks, and select Connect. If users prefer not to share chat history or memories, they should leave the optional toggle turned off during setup. The integration requires the latest versions of both the Starbucks and ChatGPT apps.
Users who do not want to share ChatGPT session summaries with Starbucks should avoid connecting the integration, as data transfer becomes obligatory once the connection is established.
